The award recognizes a Georgia social studies educator for his or her leadership and service to the subject area, according to a news release. Annually, the Georgia Council for the Social Studies recognizes outstanding educators who demonstrate significant service and foster the development of democratic values and citizenship in the classroom, school and community; exhibit professional involvement beyond the normal job requirements; demonstrate efforts toward the improvement of student learning in social studies; use multiple sources to enhance social studies instruction; and participate in professional publications and/or conference and/or workshop presentations.
