Thank you for stopping by my Principal’s Message page. My name is Edward Conner and I am thrilled to be starting my fifth year at the district’s only early college model design high school, DeKalb Early College Academy [DECA]. Taking first generation college goers and under-represented populations to higher education and preparing them for college level work in half the time is a moral mission that I take very seriously. I see so many amazing opportunities for scholars and their families for 2017-18!
With the introduction of Move-On-When-Ready, more of the college course catalog at our post-secondary partner, Georgia State at Perimeter College, is free. Also, scholars can now attend college during the summer semester for free as well. With this much access to college course credits, DECA administration is committed to having as many scholars earn an Associate’s degree and specific types as possible. Imagine the Commencement exercises where every scholar earns a high school diploma and an Associate’s degree!
DeKalb Early College faculty, support staff, and administration will work tirelessly to make the scholars’ educational experiences as positive and fruitful as they can be. Through the district’s new Board-approved curriculum, our Common Instructional Framework, and constantly instilling the Habits of Mind – our scholars will become more independent, life-long learners who can deftly advocate for their own development and operate from a strong social conscience. As future citizens and community leaders, we owe it to our students to prepare them for these roles as well as we possibly can. I look forward to partnering with parents and other stakeholders in this worthy endeavor.
Our collective hard work has paid off over the years. Given our extremely high CCRPI scores, DeKalb Early College has been a top five high school in Georgia for several consecutive years. My focus is to continue this level of success, but to push to “enrich the story behind the numbers.” If we improve SAT scores, better universities and scholarship opportunities open up. If we provide more hands-on learning and possibly internship opportunities, then our scholars get a stronger sense of purpose in life. Given the hard work of all stakeholders, this is an amazing school…no doubt. However, I am committed to the ideal that continuous growth is never-ending.
DECA is great, but could be better. I look forward to taking this journey with you.
Principal, DeKalb Early College Academy
